hey guys
i know i posted this a while ago but just got my first speeding ticket today and am serious about getting a radar detector now. i would like to spend around 200 bucks, at most 300. Now i could get a used V1 for that price but then will i be able to take advantage of the upgrade plans they have ?
is it worth it to spend 400 from the official site to get the upgrades...some feedback would be highly appreciated.

Q, you waited too late dawg. Oh, well, those things aren't full proof anyway. I'm not big on spending hundreds of dollars on used electronics (certainly ones that may have been sitting in the sun on someone's dash for no telling how long), so I would buy new.
The Escorts are great and cheaper than the V1. I personally have no preference, as I have used both, and they both work well. I might recomend the S1 from Escort. Wireless, quality, and less $$$ than the V1.
Keep in mind, if your by yourself, a radar detector won't help you much. These things work in packs, not when your alone.

so u mean if i am the only car on the highway it wont work as well ? isnt it easier to spread the signal to catch it back then ?

I have an Escort Passport 8500 "SuperCharged Performance"....and it works well. But I've heard that V1s are the best...so I think I'll look into that...sooner or later, I'm in no hurry to do anything. So for right now I'm very happy/satisfied with my Escort.
I bough mine on Ebay. You'll have better chances of finding some good used ones cheaper than the original price on Ebay. Escort recently came out with the Escort X50, I thought about selling mine and either getting a used X50 or a used V1 on Ebay.
I've been researching the V1s and found out that they too have a recent edition. So when searching on Ebay I'm only interested in the Valentine 1, Version 1.8. Otherwise things can get pretty costy when trying to upgrade.

yes but if u buy one ebay , say a version 1.8, then can you upgrade from valentineone.com when a new version comes out ? I know if you buy it new from them directly then everytime a new one comes out you can upgrade.

This might be a little off topic, but I have been looking at radar detectors too.
Why the hell does the V1 look like something out of the 80s? While I am sure the V1 is a great radar detector, I am going to buy the Escort 8500 just because it dosen't look like it belongs on the dash of Burt Reynold's screaming chicken.

Q: If your by yourself, the cop's radar detector will tell him what he needs before you have time to slow down. At least when your in a pack of cars, you slow, they don't...they get the ticket and you don't.
BMWLotAttendant: You can send your 8500 in and get it upgraded to X50 software, as well as a new cord, and a check out from the company for $50.
MrChance: They look like they were designed in the 80's because it was. It's a good unit though....if it ain't broke, don't fix it. The internals of course, have been modernized.
i was under the impression the V1 were the only ones with a front and rear detector in the unit...i am qrong right ?
also does anyone know if i buy the escort from their website can i keep upgrading for a small prce indefinately ? does bestbuy or circuitcity carry escort ? cuz i know none carry V1s

Q: The Esccort and Valentine detectors are the same in terms of detection (Front/Rear laser, X, K, KA, etc.), the main difference is that the V1 from Valentine tells you where it's coming from with little arrows on the front of the unit. They both work great, and wouldn't say either is way better than the other.
V1 is only factory direct (or Ebay), many retailers sell Escort (including myself).
