in another topic someone mentioned the Nakamichi CD400 headunit...

i was looking into getting a BMW CD changer (95 318i) to go with the car, I'm still getting prices on those... BUT i was going this route because i hate the look of an aftermarket stereo with stupid colors and flashing lights, etc etc, i want it to look factory. when i started looking at the nakamichi i saw it looks very factory. it would improve the overall sound, and put CD input in the dash instead of in the trunk.

my question is, anyone using this headunit? how well does it fit exactly, is the factory headunit the same size? do the colors (amber) match up well? also, i noticed on the front of some of them it had RDS listed, i know this is the digital radio station identification and song title/artist id that appears on the unit when listening to the radio, but i didn't really see it listed on the descriptions i saw...

the headunit is a bit pricey, but i'd pay the price to get something that looks OEM as long as it really does. and it fits without needing other crap. and it sounds better. otherwise i may as well get a changer... what do yall think, anyone own this thing?

These headunit are geared towards sound quality rather than fancy motorised flip down and flashing lights!

They are top in build quality and sound quality too.

After all that I am using a Clarion unit - look very factory too, its something like this:

I second the Clarion although I have heard lots of good stuff about nakamichi. I put a Clarion in and it has different color selections. The "mandarin" color option matches almost perfectly to the BMW amber color. Also it is a black unit so no flashy silver and such. Looks relly good, sounds really good, not that hard to install....I had never installed anything in my dash before and i figured it out.

this is the step up from mine but is now alot cheaper and my cd is no longer on the site. Oh yeah the best thing about it is that it plays mp3 and wma files. I burn wma(windows media audio) files in artist specific folders and the unit reads them all and displays the names of the folders so i can search and while playing the songs displays the titles. Plus i fit around 20 albums on one actual cd. That is alot better than a 10 disc changer.

crutchfield will give you a pretty detailed instruction for install and they have people that you can call to help too.
