Sorry, never did a Z3/4. Never got a chance to rip one of those apart. Typical BMW fashion is molded carpet (tough to run wires under without making a hump), door sill plates that are tough to pop loose but pull hard and it'll come up. A little difficult to get to the trunk area from the cabin. Hopefully someone else will chime in...

in my e36 i found it easier just to run it straight back under the carpet in the center console and only had to take out the back seat :\

I'd be curious as to how hard they are. BMW thinks their audio systems are the bomb and [sarcasm]NO ONE will EVER want to upgrade their audio system. We here at BMW know exactly what EVERYONE wants in an audio system.[/sarcasm]

im gonna take a shot at it sometime this week, ill be sure to take pictures and try to do a DIY, also, i know not all bimmers have a factory amp, well, at least my e36's didnt....would my z3 have one? its doesnt have the HK upgrade thou...at least i dont think it does...

if i installed an aftermarket HU, would i run into any troubles if it did have a facotry amp? if it does have a factory amp, how would i ago about getting rid of it, and tapping into the wires so i could power the speakers with my 4 channel amp? did i make sense?

edit: i dont think i did...

if there is a factory amp in the trunk, there should be wires going from it into the speakers right? how would i go about using my own amp to power the stock speakers without having to run rcas and speaker wire back to the head unit?
