does your amp have fuses already in it?

General rule of thumb, (da_bull correct this if i'm wrong), there should be a fuse for each channel of your amp, add them up, (4x 25A fuses = 100A main fuse)...

2x20 amps, D3ity is right just add 'em up, use a 40 amp main fuse. 8ga. wire is fine for that amp. 8ga. is good up to about 50-60 amps in a typical 18 foot car run. If you have more than one amp you will have to add that one's fuses in too. Or run another wire for the second amp.

Switches on your amp:

1. This is the RCA selector.
[1(mono)] is if you are using it for a sub amp only (or kind of a center channel) and only have 1 RCA, or in the case of your 4 channel, you can use it as a larger 2 channel.
[ST] is a typical stereo input which is what you want for your setup.
[1+2] combines the L and R RCA signal into one signal. This would be more for a center channel where you would want both left and right information coming from both channels.

2. This is the crossover selector.
[Off] lets the signal play full range
[HP] High Pass filter. It allows only the mids and highs come through, filtering out the bass frequencies (this is what you want on both channels)
[LP] Low Pass filter. Just the opposite, blocks mids and highs, just letting the bass come through.

3. Filter Frequency: adjusts how much filtering takes place. Set both of these at around 120-140hz at first. You can fine tune it later. Remember that the lower you set this, the better it will sound, but its a trade off, you cant turn it up as loud in this setting. I wouldnt go below 100hz. You can turn it up more by adjusting more bass out of it.

4. Gain: This determines how much of an RCA signal gets in the amp. A lot of people think this is a volume, but its not. Yes, it gets louder as you turn this up at any given volume at the headunit, but you can accomplish the same thing by turning the gain down and turning the headunit up. This way actually sounds better, with less static noise in the system, by letting the amp do its job of amplifying the given signal.

Lather, Rinse, and Repeat for channels 3/4. If you have bigger or better speakers in the front you can set the HP crossover frequency a little lower on the front than in the rear (i.e. 100 for the front and 150 for the rear, you can play with that a little to fine tune, to see what sounds good).

Hope that helps,
Bill...

ive got a question about my infinity basslink which arrived today
http://manuals.harman.com/INF/CAR/Owner's%20Manual/BassLink%20om.pdf

its a powered single subwoofer and amp all in one plastic box
thing is it has 4 RCA inputs (front left and right and rear left and right) the manual says these are there for head units with "four line level (RCA) outputs" why on earth do i need 4 RCA inputs for one speaker?

it then says you use only front left and front right for headunits with 2 dedicated subwoofer RCA outputs which makes more sense i think.

my head unit has three pairs of RCA outputs the first pair are labeled "front" the second pair are labeled "rear" and the third pair are labeled "subwoofer".

does this then mean i effectively only have 2 subwoofer outlets and i should follow the wiring plan for HUnits that have 2?

what about using the 2 RCA (right/left) outputs on the alpine amp to provide a signal to the Infinity basslink? good idea? they are not labelled subwoofer as the HU outputs are

I just do not understand this at all

why would i connect speaker AND line level inputs to a subwoofer?

CONNECTING BASSLINK TO:

1.Head units with dedicated subwoofer outputs
(line-level): Connect the subwoofer output from
the head unit to either the front or rear line-level
inputs.

2.Head units with four line-level (RCA) outputs:
Connect the four line-level outputs to the four
line-level inputs on BassLink.

3.Head units with two line-level outputs and two
(or four) speaker-level outputs: Connect the two
line-level outputs from the head unit to either
front or rear line-level inputs on BassLink.
Connect two speaker-level outputs from the
head unit to the Universal Interface inputs on
BassLink, which correspond to the unused linelevel
inputs.

4.Head units with four speaker-level outputs:
Connect the four speaker-level outputs from the
head unit to the four Universal Interface inputs
on BassLink.

5.Head units with only two speaker-level outputs
or two line-level outputs: Connect the two
outputs to either front or rear inputs of
corresponding type.

No 3 . confuses me!

The reason for 4 inputs is so no matter where your facer/balance is, you will get signal for the bass. I would just use the headunits sub out, so you can have control from the front. Ignore the speaker level inputs. Those are designed for if you had a stock system with no RCAs. You will be doing No.1.

my next job is to install the basslink under the floor panel in my e46 touring. i'm not keen on it taking up luggage space which was why i chose it in the first place) strange thing here is that the speaker is on one side and the controls on the other. i was thinking of suspending it under the floating (non secured) floor panel and cutting a hole in the floor and covering it with heavy duty mesh. this would mean though that if the speaker cone faces up the controls will be on the underside. the feet can be positioned any way. the other issue here will be that the wiring will hang. very limited options really. i think the alpine amp will go nicely where the cd changer normally goes so will be fixed in position. am i going to be ok for air circulation ?

So I need
8 gauge power wire
8 gauge ground wire
in line fuse holder and 40 amp fuse
16 gauge speaker wire

can you advise lengths needed???? i was thinking 12 metres speaker wire

ive seen lots of kits online but theyre all 10 gauge power wire or theyre 12 or 17 gauge speaker wire and theyre 10 metres which seems a bit on the short side
many thanks

It depends on where you are mounting your amp. If you are running the speaker wire in and through the door jamb to the speakers, you might have pick up a few more feet (meters) of speaker wire. 15m should get ya really close. Unless you have a wire stretcher, its better to have more than you need.
