interesting argument developing in my homeland (UK) about my positioning of the rear tweeters ...im told that they are completely useless where they are as they are directional I quote "as about as usefull as tits on a bull!" well so now i dont know whether to move them..
i quoted what i was told here ie that they are not needed in the back as you want a front sound stage and the reply was ...
" true if you are only interested in sound reproduction for the front passengers, which is fine for most people.
But if you are only after sound stage, why did ou not put a cheap(er) set of co-axials in the rear door cards and save yourself all of the bother?"
It really depeneds on what you are after. In true audiophile form, yes the rear speakers are supposed to be very, very subtle. The arguement is when you go to a concert, you are facing the band, listening to music coming from what's in front of you. Even in an indoor concert, there is usually very little you can hear behind you.
In that respect, most of your money should be spent on the front sound stage. The rears really in that case shouldnt have tweeters at all. High frequencies dont bounce off walls very well, therefore you cant really hear the reflected sound over what would be coming towards you from the band.
These same people that are concerned with placement of rear tweeters also know about how the car audio world judges sound systems. To judge correctly, a good score on the RTA (real time analyzer), would actually sound terrible. You are actually trying to achieve a very flat eq curve. A perfect score is actually harsh on the ears. Very little bass, the midbass is really boosted (its the hardest to reproduce in the automobile enviroment), midrange is about normal and high frequencies are very subtle (they take the least power to reproduce).
If you arent REALLY competing, and most people arent, just go what sounds good to your ears. At the end of the day, its your ears that you are trying to satisfy, not your buddies, your friends, no forum hounds, not mine, its your ears and your money. So please your ears and dont worry about what others think. Take a REALLY good listen to whatever components you are about to purchase, listening to music that you listen to, and go from there.
Hope this helps...
Bill

Thanks Bill! not competing...no one else is going to hear it except me and my family (and they couldnt give a hoot). i always like the music in any car ive had to kind of come from no specific place or no where identifiable if you know what i mean..kind of impossible i know. i dont want to drive sitting in front of a band on stage at the front as i think that will distract me from the road a little ( i might start imagining the lights ahead are part of the light show lol). i want to drive with the road in front and the music around me. this front sound stage concept surely cant really be replicated in a car anyway i believe as the speakers are well below where they would be in a concert and only slightly in front so its always going to be more like listening suspended above the front of the stage hanging from the lighting rig..isnt it? lol
i might try the tweeters higher up in the back i might also see if i like em in the rear doors..i think you did suggest earlier on i should try them in different places before cutting holes but being a bit impatient not to mention cold i ignored that bit. ah well! as ive put in this much effort may as well do the job properly ...ill taker the speakers out tape them in different positions and find out what I like best ...and report back later
Thanks again!
Simon
well i'm sorry to say i'm back with another problem that has recently developed. the whistle was fixed but now i have crackling in the morel and tweeter in the drivers door only.. dont' understand how it is still present when i send all the sound to the right side of the car with balance control. it is both voume related and vibration related becoming constant at high volume while being only present when i hit a bump at low volume. as i say mid and tweeter and left side door only... i can hear music albeit much less so from left tweeter and left front mid accompanied by a constant crackle with volume very high and balance fully to the right?! should i be hearing music from the left with balance all the way to the right?
crossover faulty perhaps?
thanks in anticipation
