New KEys'

Hey all, I bought a switchblade type key for my 95' M so that I'm not carrying arounda spare all the time. I didn't get the original key that came with the car. So I was wondering after I get the key cut is it going to start my car. I caught some sort of word at 95+ cars have some sort of chip.. How do I get the chip out of the old key.?

the system the car is equipped with is EWS. not sure which generation of EWS a 95 has though. I forgot. And I have been wondering about the same thing too, being as I see all these key blanks on ebay. Because as you know, most if not all keys come from the motherland where they are cut and programmed VIN specific.

Sorry I couldn't be much help.

I know we have a place called Jay Key. They can cut about any sort of key. Check and see if you have any locksmiths in your area. They'd be much cheaper than the dealer I would think.

but a locksmith could cut the key.. cause I went to the dealer today and he was like we send it to bmw.. You'll need a proof of ownership vin # and your drivers license in order to send it out. and he said it wouldbe at least a hundred bucks just to copy the bitch. lol I didn't know it was that serious.

Shop around for a locksmith. I really don't know what kind of resources you have nearby, but on a 95, you should be able to just find a locksmith that can laser cut keys. They'll make a big deal about it if thy have the equipment. Otherwise, the dealership is the way to do it. If you don't want to pay the $100, ask them how much it would be to just get a regular, non-lighted key. I paid $30 for mine -- after providing proof of ownership. If all you need is a key, I would get the cheap one from teh dealer and put the flip key back on eBay.

SO I couldn't have them just cut the flippy key.. it's pretty cool.. one of those things that you'd sit and play with for hours while your bored. haha wouldnt wanna get rid of it. but if its all I can do.
And. what is teh def. of a lighted key. is that just so it works with your alarm or is there a light on it or what.. I hear it used alot in my search for another way.
