I have never had an E36 (just a 30 and 46) but I think my advice is pretty much the same. IF the speakers in the doors are the little mmidranges about 3 inches across, disconnect them and forget them. I dont know the speaker sizes in an E36
Get the best set of components for the front that you can afford. Put some in the back if you want but a £200 set up front will walk all over a £100 up front and £100 in the back in the sound quality stakes. Only use components, forget the coax/triax types, leave them for the Citroen Saxo/Chav brigade.
If you have a ski hatch it makes an useful mounting for an alternative sub (pic attached) I hate losing boot space.
