you know how some subs have the basket facing out, I want to do this but i want to know the cosequences first, how is spl and sql affected and do i have to make a special sized box, i was going to make a custom one any way but with normal dimensions
There are no drawbacks.
It makes zero difference SPL or SQ wise.
The only thing is since the sub's displacement is a non-factor, the box can be a tiny itty bit smaller.
The only thing to be careful of is that the mounting hole is smoothed a little bit and large enough to allow the surround to fully extend without rubbing the edges.
agreed, make sure nothing is free to roll around in the trunk, possibly chipping the magnet; paper (or anything else) getting in the cooling vents, or knocking the speaker terminals off the sub.
its a cosmetic thing, a lot of the newer subs look awesome in the back and it is kind of a shame to hide it in a box...
a lot of subs have the magnet/basket displacement specs in the manual. like sp0rky said its such a minute difference, it doesnt matter.

you could build the box and cut the hole so the sub fits in normally (to make sure it fits good, then put your last piece of wood (the bottom or back, one you wont see) and mount your sub before putting on the last piece. Or cut a small window on the opposite side of the sub that can be sealed up with an additional piece of wood.
