So in my golf I had a 12" Clarion sub that sounded great.

In my new 325is I am going to step down to a 10" in the interest of savings space.

I also want the subs to look very clean.

Which would you choose? Any experiences?

JL Audio 10W0-4 ($99US)

Infinity 100.3se ($109US)

Are you speaking to the quality of the brand in general or this specific speaker?

Have you tried Infinity? It seems to have a much higher RMS Power Handling.

Thanks for your vote!

the JL is more boomy than the infinity. I have an Infinity sub and its great. Sub is rated at 300W RMS and my amp is 357W RMS (as tested at the factory and stated on the birth certificate). Never had a problem. Good SQ across the board regardless of music type.

On the other hand, the JL is a serious sub. If you want seriously strong bass, my experience with JL would lead me to reccomend that.

i have had a 10W0, and for being a W0 (entry level sub) and handling only 125W RMS, it sings! it hits hard for a sub of the price range and power handling. infinity makes great products, too but are more for smooth bass, not pounding music. wel from my experience anyway.

It just depends on what you want. Those are two completely different subs.

Infinity is for SQ. In a sealed box, it will offer the flatter frequency response. They are musical subs. IF you listen for a tight punchy, and accurate bass, this is the sub for you. They make three levels of subs, each level improving with build quality and power handling improving. The warranty on this sub is relatively standard with a full year parts and labor warranty. Infintiy is one of the premium speaker manufacturers and will reward their customers accordingly.

JL is for SPL. In a ported enclosure, it will offer that wang wang most desire. They are rugged and loud with power handling in mind. They have gained similar recognition as Rockford Fosgate and Stillwater Designs (Kicker) as an athletic speaker. They also have a similar scale of product line to the aforementioned. Warranty is also similar and they treat their customers accordingly as well.

JL 10s will do you just fine. They are amazing subs. Yes, they are made for hitting hard and deep, however, as 10 inchers, they will also provide great bass response to create overall SQ. They say they can handle 125 watts RMS, but don't be afraid to give them a little more. I have had a lot of experience with JL and there is nothing I don't like about them. I can't wait to get a hold of a w7. Infinity's are great subs, but its just plain hard to beat a JL. I have infinity components in my car and they are amazing. However, if you want to spend a little less, you can try Alpine as well. I have two Type R 12s and they are absolutely immaculate. They create such good sound. The Type Rs are compared directly to JL w6s and the Type Ss would be comparable to a JL w0 or w3. Their prices are really good as well. You can find the Type S for about 70-75 bucks and the Type R for about 100-120 in a retail store. Go on Ebay and you can find them for much less, brand new.

Thanks for the advice guys!

I think I would do the 10" JL in a sealed box.

I'm going sealed to save space and also, my previous Clarion 12" was sealed and I thought the bass was outstanding...

Another thought... What about the JL 8" Stealth Boxes that mount up to the rear deck? If I had 2 of the 8" stealth boxes, would it give me the save bass as 1 10" JL? It sure would save a lot of room...

8 inch subs are great, that is what i am using. But no they would not give you the same type of bass as a 10. There is not a LOT of difference, but i will elaborate....

The bass produced by a given sub is based on it diameter. The larger the sub, the deeper the bass. Also, the bigger the sub, the slower the reaction time. This means that an 8" sub will be very punchy and will be able to keep up with any kind of music. On the other side of this, a 15" will make very deep bass but will struggle to keep up with fast paced music.

So if you had two eights you could easily eclipse to the total output of one 10" sub, but the 10 would still be able to reproduce lower frequencies that the 8 could not.

BTW, I have been designing audio systems for over a decade (my vocation and passion in life) and the ultimate car subwoofer set up would be two 8" subs and a single 12". I mention this so you have a better understanding of what the crap I am talking about....

my neighbor has perhaps the ideal setup running in his sonoma. he has 2 rockford fosgate 12"s running off a fosgate 400x2 amp, and 2 rockford fosgate punch 8"s for midbass running off an infinity 102a (100x2)

the midbass improves his sq noticeably and i can def. tell a difference between the pace of music these spekers were meant to play.

Well I don't think I want to put a 12" in, simply due to space...

I think I'll start with the 10" JL to get the deeper bass I want right away. From there, my next step will be to install the 2 8" Stealthboxes...

Thanks for the input guys!

**EDIT

Having said that, the JL website says there will only be a 2"x2"x4" difference in the size of a 12" box vs. a 10" box... maybe it's worth it to stay with a 12"?

I was just thinking....

I need to build a new box to house my XM tuner. If you want, I'll sell you my current 12" Infinity (50-300W RMS, 1200W peak), Blaupunkt amp (357W RMS bridged @ 2 ohms with 0.1% THD, estimated peak is 500-600W), and box for $400 shipped. Amp still has owners manual in bag and all mounting hardware in original box. They work great, only problem is part of the box just needs to be screwed together better. If I have time I'll do it tomorrow. I'll sell it sans sub for $350 and load it in my next box. I'll sell it sans sub and amp for 150, but the right wing has a slot made for that amp.

Either way, the box is custom fit for the e36 rear seat, and fits flush against it. The box was built off a copy from a box I had built for 2 10s so that the spare tire can be easilt removed without removing the box.

LMK.

You are entitled to buy what you want, but Prez has a good offer.

What I posted before was very accurate, the JL is more for SPL and the Infinity SQ. In other words, if you listen to Rap and R&B buy the JL. IF you listen to music, buy the Infinity.
