i just got my 98 m3 and i am looking to put in an aftermarket head unit, but i have a bmw cd changer in the back. will aftermarket HU's control it?

also, how hard is it to install a new HU...i have always done it before in my other cars, which we not near as sweet as this one, and i am worried about taking the dash apart...

thx

As for taking apart the dash, it's very simple. I could probably change the HU myself, and as a few people in these forums will tell you, I'm very mechanically dumb. I've never done it before, but I'd assume it's just remembering which wire goes where... as for accessing it, opening up the dash is simple.

New Pioneer DEH-P760MPin my '02 325Ci. The colors don't match but the Organic Display makes up for it I guess. Last night was the first night I had it and I spent some time staring at that display in my driveway.

yeah i got a pioneer one just like that..a model earlier though i think, no mp3. i dont want to put it in cuz its old and my new m3 is way to bitchin for it...

i would think with your pricey car you would have sprung for a better HU

trust me the organic movie thing gets lame after about a week, and you turn it off.

still no one is telling me where i might find an adapter to hookup a BMW cd changer to an aftermarket HU...

I had the original OEL HU that came out about 4 or 5 years ago. I don't really care about the displays itself. The deck is a lot of bang for the buck.

Did I mention this is going to be my wifes car primarily and that is why I didn't get a better HU. I was fondling the DVD screens yesterday and though better about it. I came really close to getting the alpine unit with the huge in-dash screen. Talk about distractions though. My wife would have wrecked the car in a month watching that thing instead of the road.

Pics of my Clarion ProAudio DXZ845MC I just installed. I will try to get a night shot if I am ever around my camera when its dark out (I keep it at work).

Ilumination is about as perfect a match for factory as you could hope for- and it sounds great. I am very happy with the HU.

Blaupunkt Acapulco MP52

Unfortunately it illuminates in blue (not red), but other than that it looks pretty close to factory (the camera flash made it look lighter, but its a very dark grey color).

You can also see the XM Commander "installed" in the sunglass cubby.

Alpine 9835 with the oh so sweet biolite display...

The daytime pic i hadn't yet set the buttons to be amber like the rest of the dash yet but everything but the screen changes color.

oh yeah, that is the way to go. Thats the one i am planning to get.... I didn't want to get an HU that didn't match the interior lighting...but the new alpines do and the 9835 is the best one...well best one under $1000.

You can get them on eBay for like $350...retail $550 in stores...blah.
