ok, i have a 97 Estoril Blue M3 Sedan, and i have been unable to find information anywhere as to what i need to do put a new head unit in.
I have a Clarion DXZ835MP head unit (awesome deck!) that i want to move into the m3, and soon add in an amplifier for the front stage and some new speakers up front; then later a 10" sub (probably an image dynamics IDMAX 10") and amp for that as well.

So my questions are these:

Will my head unit (1 din) fit where the stock one is?
If so how do i remove the old one and mount the new one?
Where can i find a wiring harness to connect from the stock one? or what color wires go to what speakers/power/ground/illum/whatever
Is there a stock amplifier? If so where and how do i remove it?
What size speakers are in the front?

any help with any of these would be great!

if it helps i can take pictures of the stock deck as i dont know if there were multiple offered setups (the car was my moms, she got an 04 e46 m3 convertible) but it has a tape deck and radio controls only.

yes.
there is a special hex screw. you can buy the special BMW tool or try some hex of your own. the screws are under the little flaps on either side of the HU.
Crutchfield sells adapter kits, or you may try going to Best buy and purchasing a kit from them. The wires will say what they are and you can connect them from there.
The stock amp is located on the side of the car behind the carpet on the drivers side of the trunk under the carpet.
Front kick panel speakers are 5.25, doors are 3.5s and tweeters.

Also, if you are interested, I have custom dual sub box for sale that fits the contours of the e36 trunk. Its for 2 10s and allows full spare access without removal.

Awesome, thank you so much!
Got any pics of the sub box installed so i can see how much space i lose? I was thinking of going with a single 10 simply because i do need to keep as much trunk space as possible.

This is the box I am selling. The grill is homemade and easily removable if you dont like it, but it works and was cheap. The box contains one working 10 (400W peak 200-250W RMS); the other is non working. Since you want 1 10, it would be possible to mount your amp over the the other hole and hide all your wires inside that cavity. I had it sold to one member here who was going to do that but he ended up going with larger sub. This image is a photoshop of the amp setup I'm talking about.

the un-photoshopped box...

As you can see, plenty of room still left in the trunk. The cost of the box to me was 200, not including subs.

That looks cool, but unfortunatly it still takes up a bit more space than id like. I would like a small box about .75 cubic feet sealed for a single 10" Image Dynamics sub
thanks anyways

Since im wondering, and you seem to know your shit, can i hook up my new head unit straight away?
I mean, can i remove the stock deck and amplifier, and put in my new one without problems?
I'm somewhat worried that the front channel wont be the right impedence or something and i'll fry the clarion's internal amplifier.

o well, I wish you luck finding one. The problem is the angle of the back seat pushes most universal boxes out into the middle of the trunk and leaves a gap behind the box. It drove me crazy because I couldnt find one to fit well wihtout blocking the spare so I finally had that one made. Then when one sub blew and took my amp with it, I made the first one witha slot for the amp. Freed up a ton of space.

you should be able to hook it up no problem, but then again you may have to bypass the amp. Different people have had different expeirnces with the stock amp and aftermarket decks. Try it without bypassing the amp first, then if it doesnt work you'll have to do some rewiring.

I always assumed i would have to bypass the stock amplifier. I had to in the cressida (the only other car w/ a stock amp ive worked on) but in that case it was dead anyways.
Do you know how to bypass the stock amp? Do i just have to disconnect the input and output harnesses and attach them together?

I honestly dont know exactly how, as I've never had to do it and my car doesnt have factory amp, but you should be able to do that. If not, you can cut the wires from the harness on both sides and connect them with butt connectors.

Ok, i removed the old deck, wired up my new one, and installed it. And no sound comes out (the deck lights up, and it was working 2 hours earlier on my other car)

So i figure it is the stock amplifier causing the problem. My problem is i cannot get to the stock amp. I removed the carpet in the trunk and i can see it, and i can remove 2 of the bolts securing it (the ones closest to the taillights) but i still cant get the amplifier out.

I called best buy to find out how much they will charge to remove it and make sure everything works, they said i need another amplifier because i have an 8 speaker system and every speaker has to be rewired.

Im guessing that is BS, but maybe its not. Can someone here tell me what i need to do to get to the stock amplifier, how to remove it, and how i have to rewire it so that everything will work properly?

Or do i really need a 4 channel amp? In which case i'll just buy 2 of them and run them myself to the speakers.
