Hu Install Problems

Hey ive been trying to install my head unit (Alpine 9847) in my 1995 325is (e36).
Here's what happened: After first attempt, the radip played fine, but cd's didnt play, and the head unit lost all presets and time whenever i turned off the car. Then i called crutchfield and followed thier instructions, switching the blue wire with the blue wire with stripe, and some other random things. NOW, i cant turn the head unit on at all. The fuse for the head unit, or the car is not blown.

Any ideas what the problem is? Is there a common BMW audio problem I am overlooking, I am a newbie haha.

i had the EXACT same problem you did, but then i took the stereo back out, and rechecked all the connections and THEN it worked. so look over the schematics, and make sure all the connections are solid

Check for power on the red and the yellow wires with a multimeter (or testlight...*shudders at the word*). Check to make sure you have a good ground. The losing presets at your first attempt can either be a bad/poor ground or the yellow wire doesnt have power when the key is turned off. Did you get the adapter harness to plug it in, or are you cutting the factory harness?

da bull hints towards the problem. If you loose your presets, your constant power lead is not properly connected (it's the yellow lead on some head units, and red on others). As for radio but not CD sound, it's because you didn't hook up your amp turn on wire. Make sure that both the blue, and blue/white striped wire are connected properly.
