How to install door speakers in E36 - BMW Forum

Hi all,
I have a 1996 M3 with the Harmon-Kardan sound system (in which I replaced the HU with an Alpine CDA-9857). The left door mid-range speaker has started buzzing so I bought a replacement from BMW ($90!) and now I need to find out how to install it.

Is there some web site or book that shows how to uninstall and install these speakers? Do I have to remove the door panel? Do I need special tools? Do I need to pay someone to do this for me?

if your talking bout the like 3in one you take the door panal off then you see the speaker from behind there is a little thing holding it to the door unscrew it and the speaker should beable to come out after you unhook the wires. Im pretty sure thats how it is. i might be wrong though. take your door panel off and take a look

Thanks for the reply. So I need to take the door panel off. I looked in the FAQ/DIY stickies and found nothing. Can someone tell me what is involved in removing (and replacing) the door panels? Do I need special tools or fasteners or such?

dude, under the door handle on the inside, there are 2 plastic pieces, remove them, then under them there are 2 screws...unscrew and pull the door off, be careful when the doors comes off to unplug the wires to the mirror adjuster and the speakers...once the door is off, ull see wat to do, its really easy

^ yea what he siad. its not hard at all. dont break any clips when you take the door panel off theres alot of them. but if you do they dont cost much like 35 cents or something.

Thanks for the help. I got the speaker installed yesterday. It was pretty easy, you have to use much more force to pull the panel off than I thought. You have to believe that you aren't damaging the door!

I broke one of the clips but when I put the panel back on, it doesn't rattle so I may not even replace it.

The last time I replaced a speaker, I paid $30 to an auto-sound install place. If I had known it was this easy, I would have saved the money. I guess they really sell information at those places :-)

awsome. how does it sound now? yea its not to hard to break those clips i broke like 7 on mine but i replaced them all. guess i used just a little to much force
