Hey Guys,

I have a 94 530i and I'm looking to do some upgrades to the sound system. First off I think the sounds system sounds great when you play rock, or any kind of music that doesn have a high empahsis on the lower frequencies. But when you start listening to rap or hip hop it sounds subpar!!

I have currently upgraded the head unit, I have a Clarion DXZ845MC as it matched the BMW interior and its got a good set of features.

What I want to do is upgrade my speakers without adding a sub, so that I get better low frequency response. Does anyone of any suggestions on some products I could look at??

Lastly what size are the speakers in the front that are embedded near the feet??

Cheers
Scott

There is only room for a 5-1/4 size speaker??

I spoke with an installer and he recommended I get the Bazooka Bass Tube and he would suspended it with some straps. If I need to remove it I would just need to unstrap it and unplug it. He mentioned that in BMW's there is very little room to work with for speakers, so if I put in larger speakers in the car I would have to do a custom job...that means shelling a lot of cash.

I'm also planning on putting MB Quartz 5-1/4 speakers all around, they sound amazing!

Cheers

You should consider what I did. I at first did not want add a subwoofer but the shop I went to had a perfect solution. JL Audio makes something called stealthbox. These are a pair of 8" subwoofers that replace your rear deck speakers. They are fabulous and are not obnoxious at all in terms of the sound. Also, because they replace the rear speakers they take not trunk space.

I would consider this long before the bazooka bass tube. Firs of all JL Audio is superior to Bazooka and secondly because they replace the deck speakers the bass does not get lost in the trunk like other subs.

Good luck.

You get what you pay for! Well worth the money. I just got mine, I will go back and look at my receipt to see what I paid. Can't remember off hand because I did this as part of a total system.

I will let you know.

I also got the MB Quart speakers only the 6 1/2. They are great! Make sure the ones you are getting are the ones that were manufactured in Germany. I heard MB Quart was purchased by Rockford and are moving all manufacturing to US. I heard these versions were crap.

Good luck and I will let you know what the stealthboxes cost me.

Nice! I will look in JL Audio! I'm not really concerned about pricing, as long as it isn't overly obnoxious..!

JWK: I was looking on JL Audio site and these Stealth Boxes are made for pick-ups?? How would I manage to fit this in my car??? Also about the MB Quartz I made sure they were all from Germany, so thats in good order...the installer told me that BMW actually uses MB Quartz for some of their cars.

Cheers, thanks for your help so far.

Bazooka Tubes and SteathBoxes are still subwoofers. You have asked for a solution that doesnt require subs. In a case like that, you need to look at low-frequency transducers, most commonly known as 'buttkickers'. They produce no sound, mount to the frame of your seat, take up little space and are not terribly power hungry so you can use a small amp. You will get the 'feel' of the bass without the 'boom'. It is another option. Crutchfield sells some but you may have to look in the Home Theater section to find them. I use these a lot in the theaters I build to supplement the subs. They work well and can help fool the mind into thinking you are getting more bass than you actually are without annoying the guy in front of you at the intersection.

I paid about $400 for the Stealthboxes. They aren't just for pickups, in fact alot of them are installed in BMW's. The one thing you will achieve from a sub will be the "fullness" that it will provide to your music as well as an added bit of punch. I don't like alot of "thumping" bass that is why I chose the stealthboxes, it just rounded out the entire sound of my music. Don't know anything about the "butt kickers" that just program mentioned, but it is certainly an interesting alternative.

My choice would be the subwoofer, but that is just my taste.

Good luck

i put 6.5's in the front with no modifications, they stick out a little further cause of the pretection cover but the previous speakers didn't have that, so i just have to modify the kick panels, and i put 6x9's in the rear using a wheel grinder
and a 500 watt amp to power them all, and then 2 10 inch subs in the back in a 91 318is
