i've never really thought of getting a sound system but my friend makes custom stereo boxes and i've been thinking, what would be the best sub/amp combo for an e30. i would like to get 2 subs and an amp but i don't know how many watts i would need to get a good sound out of 2 10" subs...could someone give me their opinion of a good setup(brand, size of subs, and size of amp)

It really depends on the sort of bass sound you want : either deep with infra sound or just "dry" bass sound with hardly any infra. Then it alos depends on the sort of music you hear.
Brands for sub are all good (do you realluy need quality ?) but I would suggest Rockford or Focal which I know and which I was satisfied with. But you have so many brands...

At the moment, I have 2 Alpine 10" S-Series subs hooked up to a 400W Audiobahn Amp. (Regardless of what my sig says; I'm upgrading soon. Each sub is rated at 300W RMS, so I'm going to go with a 600W amp.) I can tell you that the bass on this setup is pretty rediculous. My car rattles at times; the licence plate (need to get some foam padding under there), the rear-view mirror, etc... Soon it'll be pumping out 150% of what it is now.

It all depends on what kind of music you listen to. For rap/r&b/other bass-heavy music, you may want to go with a pair of 12" subs for even more power. But for this car, and especially if you listen to rock of any sort, two 10s would be great. As for brand-names, I personally like Alpine, although I can't afford Alpine amps. Audiobahn is good, and I've heard that MTX puts out good products. I'd stay away from Sony, but that's just from what I've heard, I don't have any personal experience with their amps or subs.

Make sure that you also upgrade your speakers, if you haven't already. ATM I still have my stock 17 year old BMW speakers; I can't wait for my Alpine 6x9s to arrive.

Good luck with your system, i'm sure it'll be "bumpin" soon.

My 1987 325 is no longer. Rain and an relatively inexperienced driver are not a good combination, to say the least. Luckily no one was seriously injured.

MTX is entry level. Infinity and Alpine are my brands of choice.

It is important to remember wattage means nothing in the grand scheme of things. A sub rated at 100W RMS getting 100W RMS will sound better than a sub rated at 1000W RMS getting 500W RMS. Also, it is important to look at the THD rating of the amp at its measured power. Any amp is capable of high output, but the THD is so high what comes out of the sub isn't music. Any cheap amp rated above 600W RMS falls into this category. Just remember peak power doesn't mean anything. Buy based on RMS and low THD (anything less than .1%).

Yeah, definately go with high-quality components. My audiobahn amp(s) are rated at 0.02% THD (link); I'm not sure I understand what the rating means, but as El Presidente said, lower is better.

It all depends on how much u want to spend on it... I'd Recommend 2 10-inch JL Audio Subs and an Audiobahn 2- Channel Amp with more than 300W per channel... I have 2 JL Audio 12's hooked up with a Zapco 350W 2 Channel amp and it sounds great with any kind of music ( i listen to all kinds of music)
