I'm thinking about getting a 99 E46 sedan and I was driving around with my friend who's got a brand new RSX, I was pretty impressed with the sound quality (its stock, so will my E46 sound be). Anyone that's had experience with the RSX/E46 sound wanna take a stab at comparing the two stock?

How does E46 sound generally compare? If I get one with a tape deck and no CD player and use a cd/tape converter to a portable CD player will that make sound quality a lot worse?

Thanks

I can't compare the two, but you have to understand the value of automotive acoustics to understand that even if you compare them by wattage, ohm, RMS, and sensitivity you can't really compare sound quality. What? What I mean is that the shape of the cabin has a large effect on sound quality.

That was useless, sorry for wasting your time ...

thats true.. but like right now i'm driving a 91 accord and i can definetely tell you that the sound quality is much worse than that most other cars, regardless of cabin shape. i just wanna know how good the e46 sound is really, and the rsx seems like a reasonable benchmark

I'll try, so as not to leave you standing here alone, save for the cold winter wind gnawing at your almost frozen fingertips.

Anyway

BMWs (not sure about all, but the 3-series is what I'm talking about here) have a stock 4 -6 speaker (correct me if I'm wrong) system with power from the head unit. Then there is the Harmon/Kardon Premium system that comes with 10 speakers and a 350 (maybe more) watt amp. Maybe even a CD-Changer if your good and eat all your greens.

The RSX has a 8 speaker system, no?

Not sure if that helps or not, but at least it's something to chew on ...

i think stock E46 have 8-10 speakers. and i believe 12 for the HK system.

2 on each door (3 for HK systems, correct me if im wrong). b pillar tweeter on either side. two rear speakers. (2 HK subs for HK systems)

my stepmother has a 2k or 2k1 328, and I was rather disappointed with its audio ability. I would desribe the sound itself as hollow. It seemed to lack depth and had a dark tone. But, between an RSX and an e46, I wouldnt use the audio as the determining factor. New speakers can had for under 100 that will result in a dramatic difference.

I just bought an '04 325cic yesterday. The stock is a 10-speaker system and the HK is 11 speakers. They share the same positional layout (not speakers) but the HK has a powered sub.

if thats the case, the HK has 12; i took out the HK sub so i can use my aftermarket subs and there were 2 HK subwoofers.

To answer your original question, the RSX sounds better stock than the e46. Both leave quite a bit to be desired. According to my ears, I don't think either car has an overly bad nor overly impressive interior, accoustics wise. But then again, the ground rule is to understand that a car's interior sucks as a sonic environment.

Neither stock system should be a deciding factor in buying the car. I like the RSX, and the top model RSX is a blast to drive in 6 spd. Still, I like the driver's-car feel of my 328ci much better than my friend's typeS but both are fun. 'd get the bimmer- both systems suck stock- nothing an easy install won't fix.

oh absolutely, i wasn't even contemplating going for an rsx. i'm getting the e46 regardless, I just wanted to know what to expect.

I know that a sound system shouldn't be particularly important, and I'm not going to base which car I buy on that (which BMW, I'm getting a 99 323i prob). So essentially it's just a bonus.

I've probably looked at thousands of pictures on cardomain of BMWs and I've come to the conclusion that 99.5% of aftermarket CD installs look so flamboyant that they take away more than they give. I think that has a lot to do with the simplicity of the BMW cockpit; in other words I dont think the same holds true for an IS300.

So if I were to get a car without a CD player, I would either find a reasonably priced CD player (200 or less probably) and have that installed or use the classic tape player/porable CD player adapter that everyone has. That's also one of my questions, does that significantly reduce sound quality?

I would suggest finding an ALpine 7894. Its a great headunit, now discontinued, that matches the factory lighting and souds awesome.

the alpine 7998 also matches the factory lighting as well and i believe it is still in production.

Also, if you shop around for a head unit, and put some time into finding one, there are a few (not many) that aren't completely against the grain of your interior. Also, I don't know how much you know about installing your own stuff, but a clean professional install (not from the local circuit city) can really clean up some of the gaudy looks of some aftermarket players. Just my opinion though... Either way, good luck. If I see anything interesting, I'll be sure and let you know!
