According to an article on bmwtips.com this is what is included on a car that has DSP

What is the difference between DSP and non-DSP?

The DSP system is the same as the stock system but adds the following equipment:

- Bandpass subwoofer enclosure mounted under the rear shelf. The enclosure contains two 5.25" woofers.

- Amplification for the above subwoofer

- Additional signal processing modes and a 7 (?) band graphic equalizer. The non-DSP system has only Bass and Treble controls.

I just got a 99 528i and I do not have a 7 band eq but I have the Bandpass sub box. I have a button that says DSP but it doenst light up. Do I have DSP or no?

As far as what I could dig up, if you have a "sub" in the trunk, you have the DSP system. Also if you have three holes cut in the rear deck (looking from inside the trunk) this would also confirm the DSP system. To leave absolutely no doubt, you could pull out the display, and you would find the DSP module (small black box). Locating this would not be all for not, as removing it would return your DSP system back to normal (Fader, Ballance, etc.)

If your DSP controls don't work, someone may have already beat you to the aforementioned removal of the DSP box.

Do you by chance know how to pull out the display?

And if its not there how much would it cost to replace it?
