E30 What's original?

I have an 87 325, and it has a new but cheep JVC hu installed by the previous owner. I get virtually no sound from the back speakers except slight noise if i crank the fade back and turn up the vol. I know there is an amp in the trunk, original I think. Any ideas on how to make this better? What was the original config and would it be possible/benificial to go back? If not, help! Need some tunes!

The rear speakers are REALLY exposed to sunlight. If the previous owner didnt replace them, they are a paper cone speaker stock and are probably sunfaded and worn out. You definitely wont get any benefit from going back to 1987 20 year old technology. My advice is to check the speakers first, then bypass the factory amplifier by rewiring from the headunit back. Lather, rinse, repeat. If you need any help doing any of this, lemme know...
