Current in-dash CD player for E46

I have a '99 E46 328i and am thinking about doing a retrofit for the current in-dash CD player that is in the new E46. I have the 12 speaker HK system. Ive heard in this forum that the new sound saystem in current E46 is greatly improved. Would this be the head unit and the speakers which are improved? Would retrofitting the new CD unit be a worthwhile upgrade, or should I go with the Alpine which everyone seems to like? I don't like the looks of the Alpine, and really prefer a unit which physically fits in with rest of the car, and I am not considering replacing my current speakers.

Its not worth it. You won't notice much regardless of what you do if you keep the stock speakres. Plus, I'm pretty sure all e46s have dead heads. Instead of replacing the HU, replace the amp with something aftermarket. That will yeild the greatest increase in SQ.
