Ok, so the stock changer on the '97 540i is broken. p3rsion here on the forum has his out of a 95 318i convertible for $200, will this fit? If not, what is best option here? Thanks in advance....

Also, the car has DSP, how does that come into play?

most changers will fit. if it doesnt than youll need an adapter plug, but i think bmw uses the same plug for all models.

his wont fit. 96 and higher radios use a different plug, and as far as I know no adapter exists. You have a square plug, all cars 95 and earlier have round pugs.

Yeah the digital language is different on both of those as far as I know..Zuluman13 has a 96 e36 and his mom had a newer bmw, i checked and there is no adapter for him and the plugs are different..you may be out of luck
