Car audio options for 328i

I have a 1999 (E46) 328i SE and it came with a stock cassette deck which I'd like to replace/add to as I am mainly CD based.....

Can anyone confirm the following please:

1) How easy is it to remove the head unit?

2) What connector(s) will I find if I remove it

3) Is the space its currently in standard?

4) Are there any CD changers that work with the current headunit? (Preferably MP3 enabled)

5) A few places I have talked to have asked if its the 10 speaker system or not....is there an easy way to tell this?

6) Would you get someone else to fit a replacement head unit or would you do it yourself?

i don't have any experience in installing or removing the head units, but you might want to ask woobie about this.


i'd look for an alpine unit. also, the alpine CD changer will work as well. there is an mp3 player that is compatible with the original head unit, but i can't think of where you can get it. i'll do some searching on this.

the 10 speaker is the standard audio system, and the 12 speaker is the upgraded HK system. look at your speakers, especially on the doors. if it says Harmon/Kardon, then you have the 12 speaker system. another way to find this out is to look in your trunk. if you see a black box up above, that's your HK sub/amp. if you do not have these, then you have the standard 10 speaker system.

i'll take a stab...blitzsafe sells an adapter that works with your car, it will create a handshake with an alpine cd changer and work with your stock headunit, if you plan on upgrading your hu then don't bother...wait until you do that to install a changer, but if you want to add a cd changer to your oem hu then go here http://www.bmw-forums.com/forum/inde...showtopic=7141
