anybody upgraded their alternator?

I wanted to have a better music system on the bimmer, but I'm afraid to overtask the current 80 amp alternator. Has anybody upgraded their alternator here to the 140 amper or any other? or known anybody that has done it?

Well basically wanted to technically know if I can change from the 80 amp alternator in my 318 to the 140 amper that can be found on the 325 and other 6 cyl cars.

I'd defininty invest in a cap. There worth it to help save your alt. I don't think 2 amps would harm your alt. unless they're huge. Use the formula of P=VI to approximate how much current you need. P = power (watts), V = voltage, I = current (amps). Using the formula, I'd guess you could run a little over 1000 watts, but that's on the upper level.

depends on which amps and subs you'll be using

You are going to want to have a capacitor no matter what you do. I have a 140 amp alternator and also a 5 farad hybrid cap from Stinger, I can still see the headlights dim a tiny bit when its really pumping...thats two MB Quart amps, two sets of seperates, and an Alpine type X 12" sub...just for reference purposes. I would get a good capacitor, at least two farad, and just check out the amperage draw once you get everything going.
