Many have it as part of the rear window defrost grid.

if you have an old school one like mine then it comes up in the back...Every time you turn the radio on the antenna goes up, turn it off and it goes down

Soo, if you have that kind of antenna maby its broke, if its build in the windshild them its prob just a bad antenna, window antennas are known to get bad reseption ghead

Mine works great.

When you do use your rear defroster does it not work real well or leave areas not defrosted? if so then you may try repairing that with a kit from your local auto-parts store and thus fixing the defrosting and antenna at the same time.

check the actual connection at the antenna. It is my understanding the e36 actually has 3 and the receiver pulls the best signal from that one. The main antenna unit is located under the trim on the rear drivers side pillar. Its possible over time the connections have come loose.
