So when I go to school in august, I'll be bringing my 328i for the first time. The issue is that i dont really have an alarm right now. I had an aftermarket remote, but i wasnt sure if the alarm itself was aftermarket or if just the remote was. one day tho the alarm flipped out and kept messing up, so i pulled the siren out and ive never armed it since. even when the alarm did work tho, it never put the locks down... i still had to use the key for that. so is there a way to either fix the alarm in there or a good aftermarket one to use instead? is it a pain, or should i just take it to a alarm.sound shop?
I know when I worked/installed, I didnt really like troubleshooting someone else's mess. I would usually pull it all out and start over, knowing that my install was correct. You never know what other people do. That being said, I charged more money to install someone elses alarm. Heres my sales pitch...
Me: Do you have both remotes?
Customer: No I only have/need one.
Me: So your not concerned with somewhere out there with a remote that unlocks your doors?
Cust: Well...
Me: We cant warranty your old alarm if something goes wrong with it.
Cust: Well...
Me: I can install a brand new alarm, the only 2 remotes that operate your car, a lifetime warranty on the installation and on the 5 years on the alarm for about 50 bucks more than it will cost you to install your 7 year old alarm.
Cust: Here's the keys, I'll be back when the new alarm is done.
I dont like installing old alarms and I am sure most other installers dont either. Some shops wont. Get a new one, you can usually get it installed for less than $200 for an alarm with keyless entry. With a warranty...I like warranties...

not bad... what brands should I use, what should I not use...? The unit + install should be $200ish? I just want a system that looks my doors and has some sort of loud noise if you mess with the car a beep or light flash would be nice when i lock/unlock it too... what kind do you have da bull?
Viper or any other series of DEI products are good. Yeah a normal install should consist of alarm, keyless entry, audible and visual confirmation (beeps and lights) on arming/disarming. 200ish should get you all of this. If not, drive down here to Moooosouri and I'll put one in for less than 200 . I have one of these. I've had it since 2001. The only thing Ive done to it is replace the batteries in the remotes.

If you have a Best Buy/Circuit City, both of those are DEI dealers and should offer a nationwide warranty, all you have to do is take your receipt into anyone across the nation (just in case you move or something, and you have a lifetime warranty one).

i wouldn't go with any other product but clifford! They have the best warranty and they are super reliable. They also offer some really great features. Remote start, turbo timer, prox sensor, tilt, remote adjustable sensors. even systems that will tell you that your car has been messed with. Awesome stuff. Clifford is without question the best company out there for car security. They are DEI's main and best selling product
