Trying to figure out if my 1999 328i has an alarm system. The trunk says it is pre wired for one. Underneath my rear view mear there is a red dome light (small) but doesn't do anything when I lock the door.
How can I find out if my car has an alarm system? If I don't what would you recommend. Factory or after market?

Leave the drivers window rolled down, lock the door, wait 30 seconds, check the exterior for bird droppings (youve got 30 seconds might as well make some use of it :P ), reach through the window and pull up on the lock, and open the door from the outside. Your alarm should sound (if it has one). Put your key in the drivers door and lock/unlock one cycle, that should shut it off. Hope this helps...

My locks go down too far for me to reach in and unlock them manually. Meaning, I cannot grip them to open. Any other suggestions? Also, where to I look behind the glove box?

Just lock the doors, and then jerk on the handle kind of hard, but not so hard you break it...If you have an alarm (or one that is work anything) it should do something.

When they are unlocked, unscrew them a little to where you can grab it. What I am having you simulate is someone "slim-jimming" the door and gaining access that way, like a real break in. I am not sure it will trigger the alarm by just lifting the handle. Some cars turn on the dome light when doing that but most dont. If your car unlocks the doors when opening the inside door handle, that should do it as well, I cant remember if your car does that or not.
