17-Pin Interface Reverse Engineering

I've been scanning the web for a while now and haven't seen any info on the BMW I-bus interface for CD changers, etc.

As I understand it, this is the data path (probably simple serial, eh?) for updating the LCD on the radio header unit.
For this project, I want to keep the standard header unit and just add in a custom mp3 player/computer and just have it update the LCD that is already in the reciever.
So, I am wondering if anyone has any experience in reverse engineering the data structure on the I-bus interface.
Or maybe someone would have suggestions on better ideas for this project in general..
