I have a 2000 323i, auto, with approx. 49,000 miles. I have been experiencing a clunking noise when i come to a stop and accelerate as some other people on here have. I am scheduled to take the car to an independent BMW specialist next week and he is "going to try and figure out what is making the noise." Is everyone in agreement that this is probably an output flange and/or a tranny software problem? And if so which one is cheaper to have done? I apprciate any advice.
:welcome to the forum DEBMW. It is usually either of the problems you mentioned. The software I believe is the cheaper of the two as it is just a reprograming of the tranny software. Are you still in warranty? Then either should be fixed under that. I do not know if the Independant shop would have the updated software.

HI
I had the same clunking sound in my 87 Buick GN when the rear end differential fluid needed changing or was low.Not sure if this is you problem but might be especially if it happens more when in reverse.
Thanks Ben, unfortunately its no longer under warranty...Do you think I should take it to the dealer first and see if it is just in need of software upgrade? Or take my chances with a trusted independent BMW guy I go to?
Call the dealer and ask if the software upgrade for the tranny is free. If so I would start there and see if the noise goes away. If the software is expensive then I would ask your indy guy if he has the software upgrade and to then to check the output flange and the rest of the drive train and shock mounts.
Ben
If the clunking can be duplicated simply by loading and unloading the driveline (gas it, let off, gas it, let off), then I'd say it's the output flange on the transmission.
If it's related to downshifts, it could be software.
My money is on the flange. BMW has a new style to install. You can buy the part from the dealer, and have Mr. Specialist install it, it's rather easy.
