Heater Not Blowing Hot Air

I am starting to think there is something fundamentally wrong with the heater, and it might be a broken hose or something. I've noticed that the car's heater function just isn't, well, hot. I turn it on about 5 to 6 bars, when the engine is fully warmed up and still the heat is only warm, not hot (at 83 degrees). I've also noticed in the winters that there is a more than faint smell of exhaust in the cabin.

My guess is that there is an HVAC hose that is broken or torn and therefore causing the exhaust smell and the weak heating. I was wondering if anyboyd has ever changed this out and if so, if this can be done by an individual. It seems like something that can be awefully expensive to pay somebody else to do. Thanks for the help.

the heater valve is probably the problem with the heat, and the smell is an exhaust leak or the cabin filters are clogged.

Sorry silly me, it's a 740i 1998. IS the heater valve something I can fix myself, and I'm sure it's an exhaust leak somewhere, but do you have any idea where a point of failure is most common and if I can do that myself as well? Thanks for the advice, it'll give me something to look into.
