Some people have reported that a loud clattering noise on start up was caused by the belts, the spring tensioner, and the head shield coming loose and rattling. Thus, its hard to determine the exact cause. Some people reported the exhaust hangers breaking off due to rust causing a rattling as well.

I should ask though, what oil are you using? Using to thick an oil can cause the oil to not reach the lifters as quickly as normal causing them to make a ticking sound. - Alberta based BMW Community
