P1915 Reverse Switch Circuit Malfunction

Dont think that is causing your issue. The timing chain is a lifetime part that should never ever need replacing. Possibilities include your chain tensioner and your VANOS. VANOS seems more likely to me as its more common. Sounding like a diesel is a common complaint. Probably just need to have the VANOS seals rebuilt. Takes about 2 hours labour. - Alberta based BMW Community
