Restoring a 85 635 csi. Really coming along nicely except for a few nagging problems. Had a power steering pump whine and decided to get a new pump. Put the new pump in and it still whines. The whine will go away after 15 minutes?! Do I have an airlock problem or similar? Do I bleed something? The speedometer also does not work. I have researched a bit and it seems there is no cable but a sensor/pickup. Is this where my problem is? Any advice is appreciated. Great site!

to bleed the P/S of any air just have the car running and turn the wheel bcak and forth from each end of the travle about 5-10 times each way. this should get rid of most if not all the air that could be trapped in the lines. also check the alternator and the water pump to amke sure they are not the culprit of your whine. as for the speedo i don't remember exactly how that works and i don't want to give you any false information. hopefully someone else can shed some light on this topic.

The speedometer is ran by a pickup in the rear end diff cover, inside is a toothed ring that pulses as you drive sending info to the dash assy, on my guage cluster there is a pair of connectors about midway below the speedo location, I believe the blue one is speed and white is tach. If they are plugged in find another pickup sensor at a wrecking yard and substitute it for yours and try it before you buy a new one, they arent cheap.

The more I turn the wheel, the louder the whine so I do believe it is ps pump or system related. When I put the new pump in, it was quiet for one minute, than started whining. I am at a loss!

does the power steering still work when the noise is present. or do you notice any certian spots when turning the weel that the power steering seems like it isn't working? and did you use the right fluid? i don't know if that cars uses ATF or the 11S. but either way the cap should say what should be used.
