I'm leasing a X3 2005, and have been putting 91 octane gas since the first day.
recently, a friend of mine told me that 89 octane will do as well, since if am not interested i buying the car after the lease, why should i care??
my question is:
do you guys think is this a good idea? i mean, i know that the manufacturer recommends 91 octane, but I am wondering whether there is any serious impact on mechanics, performance of the car.

yeah, that what i've doing so far. but then again, i've read in the internet, that there're really no major differences between a 87 and 91 octane....

No major mpact except to your wallet and if she needs 91 and you use 87 the knock sensor will retard the timing if pre ignition occurs and you will lose horsepower.

I don't see much difference between any of the octane levels. Not exactly the autoban around here. I'd love to take the X somewhere I could legally open her up. I always took my 2002 for a 80 mile full throttle drive when I had it but I was part of the "Get Out of Jail Free" club then.
Higher octane gas burns slower. This is a benefit in high-compression engines especially, allowing for more even-flowing combustion and decreasing the possibility of the fuel blowing up before it's supposed to. Your BMW has sensors ("anti-knock sensors") that will detect if that's happening with the lower octane gas and adapt to it; however, it won't run like it could--it'll have lower horsepower, and from my experience in my 528, noticeably lower.
