This is an almost universal problem with E38's and E39's..there is GOOD news!

This is a (mostly) FREE fix. Search the e39 forum for this problem...in it there is an email adress for Lenora Vladovich from BMWNA...I can't remember the email off hand, but I went through the process and it cost me only $80 worth of labor and I've got a brand new cluster... The problem itself is due to weak solder joints in the LED/LCD board. Any type of moisture in the air paired with a temperature change causes the solder joints to corrode and sometimes the screen pixels will appear to flash, or just go out completely.

Good luck!!!
