PaInBeLoW is on a distinguished road
New BMW owner.

Hello! I am the owner of a new (to me) '99 740iL. Managed to pick it up at a local auction for about $2500.00 with about 150K on it. The car is not currently running (of course) and the listing for the car originally stated that the reason that it was non-running was because of a clogged oil filter? I dont even know if that's feasible BUT, this is my first learning experience with these cars. So basically Im on here to ask the experts' opinions on this?

First off - Welcome to teh Werkz!

Your problem has several wrinkles. First off, you said the car isn't running - so is it a pusher? And if so, where is the car now? Can you inexpensively get it to a dealer or a good local mechanic to just take a took at it? I would be a bit nervous if indeed the engine was oil starved as that could be a potentially very bad thing (engine could be seized and garbage, and then you bought $2500 worth of parts... !)

Anyway - you need to get things looked at before and doom and gloom or celebreating goes on. Get a fix on the sitch and report back here.

Another thoght - I don't know the condition of the rest of the car but did you check the Kelly Blue Book value with that condition and milage to get a fix on approximate value? A free and good idea on the web.

Hope things work out. The gearheads here may have some more detailed tech advice. RM

Why dont you just check it for your self also you could drain the oil to check for bearing materal also drop the oil pan to check for loose oil pump bolts which it a common issue with these cars. start with that if you need any help with these I have a couple write-ups on these cars. i have a 1999 740IL 14x,xxx as well there great cars. I love mine to death and I know once you drive it you'll love it

That's a hell of a deal on a 740 if the rest of the car is in good condition ... even if it means buying a brand new engine from BMW.
