Nice place you guys have here. This is gonna sound kind of weird, but I need some measurments from an X5 hood for a little project I'm putting together. I need to know the dimensions of the raised center section of the hood, and the grill. I need to know how long the hood is, at the center (I know it's longer on the sides), from the back (by the windshield) to the front of the grill. I need to know how wide the raised part of the hood is at the back, and at the front, and how wide the grill is at the bottom. I also need to know how tall the grill is, from the bottom edge to the point it curves back into the hood. If someone could take some measurments for me real quick it would help me out a ton. Thanks!
These are from my X5-4.8
length from windsheild to grill 43-1/2"
width of raised part of hood at back 10"
width of grill at bottom 24"
height of grill (middle of one side) to curve contact with hood 8"
Hope that thse will help

YES! That helps a lot! The inside dimension of my frame is 24" so that grill should fit perfectly! One thing, when I said "raised center part of the hood" I meant the whole raised part, everything but the lowest part on the outside edges of the hood. I thought that might be a little confusing. Near the back, by the windshield the part I need to know is almost as wide as the whole hood. I need to know that width, if you can. What you've already posted is going to help me out a lot though, thanks!
I compete in rockcrawling competitions. It's kind of like an extreme type of four wheeling. You may have seen some of our events on ESPN2 or the Speed Channel. I am building a new vehicle for the 2005 season and I have the opportunity to make it resemble any four wheel drive vehicle I want. I dig the way the X5 hood/grill looks, so that's the way I have decided to go. The rest of the body will be made of plastic or thin sheetmetal and lexan. The vehicle is not nearly wide enough to use a full X5 hood, but I think it is wide enough to cut the center part out of an X5 hood and use that, possibly cut a little bit shorter. I started building it earlier this month, and I am now to the point that I need to make sure the hood is going to fit. All I have is a crappy camera-phone pic of the buggy as it sits right now, but I'll attach that so you can kind of get an idea what it is I'm building. The buggy will be registered with the competition sanctioning body as a BMW X5. The only actual BMW parts will be the hood/grill though.
X5RockBuggy, sorry, but have been away and not checked this site lately.
The width of the hood, which is raised, where it contacts the windshield area is approx. 62". Difficult to tell exact due to the curvature of the hood.
Suggest, if you can, visit your local BMW dealer and do some measuring. Neat project. Good luck.
