A friend of mine is considering buying a 1972 2002 tii, which is listed on eBay here. He will be working on it, fixing the engine, rust, etc.

Obviously he would have to find out the condition of the frame, engine, drive linkage, suspension, tranny, the extent of the rust damage, etc. Assuming there's nothing fatally wrong with it, what would be a reasonable price to offer? What sort of problems should he look for?

My friend is mechanically inclined, having been a mechanic and car salesman for 30+ years, but I don't think that he's specialized in Bimmers. I have been interested in BMWs for a while, but lack the background he has.

Any general tips would be appreciated.

Thanks,
-plusnone

I just sold a 1973 2002tii and here is what I would begin to look at:

1. Frame and suspension, especially the strut towers as they are prone to rust.

2. This is a manual fuel injection machine (kugelfischer) and the cold stat valve is prone to failure as are the thermal switch and timer relay and except for the cold start valve these parts are hard to find.

3. heater control cables tend to break and are a real PITA to replace.

Having said that, the Roadfly.com 2002 board is a good place to start and there are other 2002 faq boards out there.
