Brand new old Beemer owner

Hi guys - Today I'm planning to purchase a 2005 330i. I looked at it Monday however, and when I test drove it, the service engine soon light came on... The owner, a person I know, said it does that when the oil needs changing... He has now taken it to the BMW dealership and he says, "yep, when it needs an oil change, that light comes on". I would have thought a BMW would have a light that says "change Oil" not "service engine soon"... My Chevy Colorado pickup says "change oil", when it's time for an oil change.

The vehicle has been sitting a lot... The person that owns it now has 2 teenagers and they always drive their bigger vehicles when they go somewhere... Any advice would be helpful.
