I have been having the same issue. "Loud Air sound" I just bought a 99 323i and noticed it for the past 2 weeks...What i have found out is it does come from the cooling fans . It gets loud on my car after about 15 -20 min driving with the AC turned on on hot days. So I started leaving the AC off and I rarely hear it now.

The sound come on after I come to a stop then starts for a few seconds then go's away when the car gets above 35 to 40 mph. Does yours do this too?????
