Are you sure you arent pushing the button the wrong way? If you push it forward once the sunroof is fully closed it attempts to tilt up the sunroof instead of open it.

When it does that, it opens the headliner part about 7 inches or so and stops. If thats the case and the top isnt tilting up, there are a few parts that commonly break in the sunroof mechanism that are each under $25.
