| E39 530d M-Sport Engine Trouble

I am hoping that someone may be able to shine some light on a problem I am having. I have a 2003 530d SE M-Sport Touring with approx 114k on the clock.
Driving the vehicle along the A14 I noticed that if I accelerated hard the engine would rev up to approx 2.5-3k and then flutter or may go to 3.5-4k and then flutter as if the rev limiter was cutting in. Placing the automatic gear box into Sport mode seemed to make it worse, presumably becuase it allowed to rev higher before changing up a gear. If you accelerated slowly there doesn't appear to be a problem and if the car is stationary in neutral it will rev up the dial without any problem. It is easily reproducible.
Connecting a diagnostics scanner, the software picked up a fault code of 1260 Delivery Pump Control system failure. Capturing live data seemes to show when the fluttering starts, the rail pressure drops from 1000 bar down to 500 and the pre injection fuel quantity drops to 0. Is this likely to be a fuel pump problem / fuel filter problem or ECU issue?
Any pointers or advice much appreciated.
