I did mine a little bit ago and it made a huge difference in the force of air coming out. I assume it is located in the same spot for all e36's. It's easiest if you lay on the passenger side floorboard. It is located behind the center console close to the floor. I don't think you need any tools just have to unclip the snaps that hold it in and then pray and carefully pull that bitch out.
