windshield wipers quit intermittenetly

I have a 2001 530i with 112000 miles. The windshield wiper system has a rain sensor and I have been having problems with it. First the sensor does not pick up when it starts raining, I have to turn them off then back to intermittent and it works as designed. The second issue is that the wipers just quit working mid swipe it has happened 3 times. If I turn the key off and back on they work fine.

Has anyone had a similar problem?
