Just bought a 95' 530i. Was missing slightly when I bought it. Changed the plugs and it ran fine for a few minutes, then started blowig thick white smoke, and missing at ide, and clearing up wen revved up. I'm thinking blown head gasket. It also had a coolant leak when I bought it. I figure the previous owner overheated it, thus blowing the head gasket. I'm new to the bimmers, so is there anything else that would cause this issue?
Thanks in advance!
Could be. First of all, check the CCV that can cause similar problems (and is a cheaper fix than a new head). The E34 V8s had a lot of problems with the block, too.
I didn't pull the valve covers. There is nothing on the oil cap or in the anti-freeze. It's just missing at idle and blowing thick white smoke. It smooths out when I rev it up, but after 20 mins, it is still blowing thick white smoke. I'm thinking the HG is blown between cylinder and water jacket. Parts alone are $400, not to mention the labor. And that don't include replacing a head if needed. I can get a motor for $600, and it would cost me another $50 for oil, filter, and anti-freeze, plus $300 to install it. Haven't got a price on labor for doing HG's yet. Thought I got a deal, guess not.
Don't know if it's to late but another problem that is overlooked a lot is incomplete combustion can cause white smoke. Normally really thick white smoke Is incomplete combustion and a foggy kind of white is coolant being burned. First start with the coolant level. Is it low? If yes head towards blown head gasket. Try performing a pressure test on your coolant system this test can help you narrow down to a blown gasket. Incomplete combustion can be caused from multiple issues, for example incorrect timing, Bad Fuel, Compression problems, ignition problems, etc. etc.
