whirring noise

I just purchased a '92 525i and noticed that the there is some sort of whirring noise coming from the engine. It is constant from the moment the car is started and does not increase in intensity. not particularly loud as it is drowned out when accelerating mostly noticeable when idling or cruising and rpms are low. Occasionally does not make the noise right after starting but will start within a couple minutes. Any idea what it might be?

Are you sure that's not just the alternator charging that battery up after starting the engine?

He said it will stay on. If it was simply the alternator charging up, it would not be a continued noise, unless there was an issue with the alternator, in which there would be a resulting number of other issues.

Alternators charge the battery, not itself

Wink

aside from whats been said, check also oil level in your steering pump. it could be low.

Other things that produce a whirring sound. loose/wrongly aligned belts, A/C pulley, fan clutch going bad(if yours has one).... or some debris just stuck in your fan ;-)
