Whining and Slippage

I'm a new member here and am interested to know if anyone can help me diagnose a coiuple of problems I am having with my 2000 523i Auto (E39 I think)

Firstly I get a fairly severe whining from what I am asuming is the power steering pump when I go beyond 1/4 lock in either direction.

Secondly when I move away from stationary I get what I can only describe as a slight wheel spin even though I know that in reality there is no wheel spin at all so I am concerned that I have a gearbox problem.

Any help here would be very much appreciated.

Welcome! You may have low power steering fluid (and possibly a leak). Your transmission may need new fluid.

I would go for a gearbox service, filter and fluid, make sure you only use BMW gearbox fluid.

Right I topped up the ATF and hey the steering pump noise has gone and I dont know if it's my imagination but the gearbox issue seems to have improved slightly.

Does the gearbox use hydraulic pressure from the same pump as th steering to change gear?
