I've seen (and replied to) a number of posts about people's airbag lights coming on. Well, mine came on this weekend for no apparent reason, and I don't have a chance to get it checked out until next week at the earliest. In the meantime, I was wondering what exactly the problem turned out to be for those of you that had yours looked into? Was it a sensor? An air canister? A loose wire? What?
Thanks!

I've just had the same problem with my 97 540i. I took it in to the dealership, there they said that they needed to recode the airbag sensors. I had my battery dead for a day and apparently that did the trick. The only thing they had to do was pop out the rear cup-holder and work on the airbag sensor there.
Thanks for the reply.... Hmm, interesting. My battery hasn't been dead, but my computer does do funny things once in awhile (like forget my driver memory settings every couple days). I wonder if that's related.
Anyway, how many arms and legs did they charge you to "recode the airbag sensors"?

That is a fair point, so tell me this: can only BMW dealers read the codes for the airbag sensors, or can any reputable shop do it? (kind of like any shop can read E39 engine codes since it's a standard interface, I think?)

I have the same problem and the dealer did not fixed it. But I have found out through other forums that there can be a number of problem most related to wire problems.
1. check your ignition switch it wears out after 100000 kilometers. You can easy check the switch by giving a knock under the switch you will see that the airbag light turns on and off :-).
Also a symptom for wear on the ignition switch is that you can turn the key around in the ignition switch without anything happing. But a lot of electrical is triggered by the ignition key.
2. under you front seats there is a connector which connects the airbag sensors under the front seats to the control unit. The connector also wear out and the easy way is to short circuit the wires. The connectors can cause problems because the move when you adjust your seat.
