I just bought a black 1997 540i with stock wheels and am looking for better. The car has about 140k miles and the paint is less than perfect...so I do not want to spend much.
The question is......can I get a decent set for $500 or so, and where can I do that? I am fine with, and would actually prefer, used wheels.
Any suggestions on what looks best on a black 540?
Spinn,
I'm new to BMW's with a new to me 528i so I can't help with new wheel suggestions. Depending on where you are, I might be interested in you old wheels if they are the right style. I have a 16" BBS basket style. Have a couple that are warped.
I agree with above
Tons of people spend money on bigger than 17 but the ride does definately get firmer, especially over small hard bumps. and they are vulnerable.Plus the tires are more(sometimes much more I think) for the lower profile. But maybe I its just me.
Where are you guys? Wheels are so expensive to ship. I will probably sell my 17 oem sports off my 01 530, they are the two piece.I am in DFW.
yes used OEM, I agree make the most sense. ALso. there are wheel restoration shops that refinish reasonably, and there are DIY guides on refinishing on bmw forums.
I believe in the late 90's 15 was standard and 16 sport. In 01 16 standard, 17 sport.
Nowadays they just spray on some rubber and call it a runflat and charge more! Ok so I have a bias.good luck
Go with 17" wheels you will have afar better ride, I put 20" alpinas on my 7 but after 3 months went back to factory fitted 18" M multispokes, much better.

I stepped in a plate of Pasta the other day - now I have to worry about my Carbonara footprint!
My E34 had 15s and I went with a set of refurbished OEM 17s (Style 21). In addition, I put in new OE struts up front, and HD struts in the rear. I agree with the replies above on size, but I would also add that you want to keep track of the offset as well. I had bought a used set of replica 17s. The offset was great for an E30, not so for my E34.
