used I've got a 2000 540i 6-speed and am considering a cat-back exhaust upgrade to get a slightly more aggressive sound. The key is that I drive my vehicle everyday. So, although I want a more sporty sound, I don't want it to be too obnoxious.

Be careful - I test drove a 1998 540 6-speed the day before buying my 1999 540/6 and the 1998 had aftermarket exhaust of unknown brand (looked like maybe flowmaster). Stock intake. Anyway it was REALLY boomy! After about 5 minutes, I couldn't take it any more!
So my 1999 (totally stock) 540/6 is totally silent and not nearly "gutsy" enough sounding but I am afraid to mess with it because I don't it to end up like that 1998 i test drove! Like you, my 540 is a dailydriver and I have to be able to live with it!!
let me know what you find out!

A lot of people seem to like RD for quiet but sporty, Although I'm not sure if they make an exhaust for your vehicle.
Look up Racing Dynamics and see if you can find sound clips. Most people complain because they are TOO quiet, yet, much more noticeable than stock.
Also - another popular choice is Supersprint, but with stock resonators (for what you want) although that set up will more than likely be louder than the RD set up.
DINAN Is also a good choice....
check into all 3, I'm sure you can find soundclips too.

I've heard lots of people say that it is quite loud. Maybe on the 540 it is different? I know it sounds excellent, but I don't know about how it resonates in the interior vs. others
I had it for about a year. It seems like they are loud on the the 3 series for some reason. I can honestly say, this is not loud at all. It does have a sporty sound but I wouldn't call it loud. If I had to compare it to the sound of another car... maybe the vette!
When I first got it, I felt the car sounded/felt sportier.... I'm very happy with it.
