well I went out today and bought myself a 1998 525 tds SE Touring.
Could anyone confirm it's model code.
What sort of MPG can I expect, with reasonable sensible, mostly motorway cruising 70-80MPH?
I've been driving a 1990 Jaguar 4.0L Sovereign running LPG. It's a great car, but it's 14 years old and I fancied something newer.
I looked at an E230 Merc which was nice but not as nice as the Jag. Then I looked at a Audi A8 3.7 V8 which was better than the Jag but insurance was absolutely horrendous, then I found this lovely Beemer and it's just what I was after.

As far as stereo's are concerned I'm not into that stuff a lot but I believe there is a seperate amplifier somewhere in the boot region. As far as I'm concerned the Business stereo that came with my 98 is pretty damn good as it is.
MPG - If it's got cruise control use it on the motorway whenever you can as you will receive better fuel economy by far - we think we control the throttle well to keep a car at a certain speed but NO WAY do we do it as efficiently as cruise. Remember the above figures are a mixture of urban and extra urban etc. so motorway you will get much more - my 523 has an average listed as 28 mpg currently she is displaying 31 mpg on the computer and I do 50-50 motorway-city so feathering it a little makes a lot of difference - I have cleared the trip comp on the motorway whilst on cruise and averaged 40 mpg over 10 miles.
Thanks for the answers!!!
The stereo question was because I'm quiet into MP3 and have gotten used to having 13hours of music on 1 cd. The beemer has a multichanger in the boot and a Business stereo in the front, whatever a 'Business' stereo involves.
I'm just looking forward to collecting the car on Friday.

LOL the BUSINESS bit really doesn't make any sense to me either - unless they expect business men that bought these cars to not have the money to get the top of the range system!
You can get a replacement multichanger which allows you to play mp3's too. I have seen them on EBAY, apparently they simply drop in where the original changer sat and use the same wiring and everything. I don't know if this just means you can cram loads of mp3's onto cd's or if it has an aux-in for mp3 players. If you buy one I know someone who is after the stock cd changer :wink
Well it's arrived. I've done 250 miles and am pretty impressed. Very comfortable and it handles better than the 14 year old Jag I've come from.
The equipment level is excellent. At 80mph it's about as quiet as the Jag. It is noisier at lower speeds, when accelerating, but I 'd expected that.
The Business stereo works just fine and no need for an upgrade.
In the event that you do want to add a cd changer, in case there is not one. Don't go to the stealership! You can hook any normal cd changer into your standard BMW wiring using what is called a soundgate converter. This way you don't have to modulate your cd signal.
Congrats on your new 5 series, enjoy!

I have a 1998 528 i love everything about the car apart from the stereo system...the head unit and the CD changer are good its just the speakers are not! You get good treble but there is no bass (I also have the business-10 speakers).
Does anyone know what manufacturer are used for the speakers? (e.g-Clarion). My Brother-in law has a 95 318. He upgraded his speakers and when he took out the stock speakers they just shitty Nokia speakers! Also terrible build quality-The cone felt like newspaper and ripped really easily.
Im not sure if this is what the E39 has got, in my personal opinion the speakers are lame!!

Give me a chance !!! I've only had the car 24 hours :0)
I like the sound, though the bass is a bit insufficient. If you find a reasonably priced solution, keep us informed. I'm not an ICE freak, don't want a Bass tube or anything OTT. but easy speaker swaps would be a possible.
I heard the dealer can adjust the software on some-model of BMW equipped with the DSP to change the crossover point of the various channels. I am not sure of all the details.
I need to listen to a wider range of music ..... been Pearl Jam, Depeche Mode (worked very well), Gary Numan, Good Charlotte and Green Day. I'm happy so far with the sound and cd multichanger.
Thats good for you man! Im more into bassy stuff like R'n'B and Hip/Hop but i still like many songs from different genres.
Glad your enjoying the car!!
