So what are all of these E numbers anyway? what do they denote, and how do I know which one I have?

They denote chassis codes... basically everytime a body style was changed it has a different e-code.

However; I can't tell you which you have since you didn't state a year or model.

Assuming it is a 5 series that you have:
1983 and earlier 5er is e12
1984 - 1988 5 series is e28
1989 - 1995 5 series is e34
1997 - 2003 5 series is e39
2004 - current 5er is e60

e is for platform (which basically means which car you drive)
M is for engine
